HERB RITTS PROFILE
Herb Ritts, born in 1952 in Los Angeles, began his photographic career in the late 1970’s with informal portraits of friends in the movie industry and has since gained a reputation as a major photographer of artists, writers, political figures, actors, musicians as well as fashion. In addition to working in the editorial field for such publications as Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Rolling Stone, Mr. Ritts has directed music videos and commercials as well as created memorable major advertising campaigns for Giorgio Armani, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein and Gap among others. In the past 10 years, he has also had solo exhibitions of his fine art Photography in Los Angeles, New York, London, Tokyo and Milan as well as Santa Fe, Atlanta and New Orleans. In the past few years, Ritts has started to make the transition from photographer to director of commercials and music videos. To date, he has direct several international commercial campaigns. Chanel, Calvin Klein, Levis, Rochas, Lancome, Paul Mitchell, Guess Perfume, Revlon, Guy Laroches, Acura Motor Cars and Cartier are only a few example of his work in this area. In regard to music videos, Ritts has been the creative eye for some of today’s most talented artists. For example, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Madonna and Chris Isaak. Herb Ritts is very much an image maker for our time, a photographer whose assured eye, fertile imagination, and affirmative spirit translate our culture’s dreams and desires into strong, palpable pictures. In the past decade, Ritts has published books that bring togeter photographs around a particular theme: “Men/Women”, an expression of his feeling for the beauty and sensuality of both sexes; “Duo”, a sequence of nude studies of a gay couple; “Notorious”, a collection of witty and inventive celebrity portraits. His most recent book, “Africa”, is a new departure - in effect, a photo-essay - photographs of the Maasai people, of animals, and of the African landscape. Fine art, design, fashion, photographic media, and global marketing are dynamically connected in today’s complex culture. Ritts’ work exemplifies our century’s broadening notion of artistic activity. Ritts is drawn to clean lines and strong forms; this graphic simplicity allows his images to be read and felt instantaneously. He enjoys evoking the tactile appeal of surface textures, showing the human body flecked with grains of sand, veiled in sheer fabric, caked with drying mud, or exposed to cascading water. His pictures - of models, of athletes, of Maasai women - celebrate the body as strong, sensuous, and beautiful. His portraits of famous figures, from Madonna to Dizzy Gillespie, Jack Nicholson to David Hockney, often have a whimsical quality, creating the sense of an intimate encounter with a larger-than-life personality. Social history and fantasy are both captured and created by Ritts’ memorable pictures.
